Italian composer and organist. Son of A. Sanmartini, a French oboist who emigrated to Italy. Since assuming the post of conductor at the Cathedral of St. Ambrose in 1728, he served as conductor at numerous churches in his native Milan. He was also active as a conductor and composer in fields other than religious music. He is particularly renowned as the founder of concert sinfonia, which was independent of opera, and influenced F. J. Haydn and others. He left behind a huge number of symphonies and chamber music. His brother Giuseppe Sanmartini (1695-1750) was also known as an oboist and composer, and was active in London in the latter half of his life. → Gluck Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
