A village in Chikujo County in eastern Fukuoka Prefecture. Population 4,054 (1995). It borders Buzen City across the Sai River to the west, and Nakatsu City, Oita Prefecture across the Yamakuni River to the east. It is located in the center of the Nakatsu Plain, and a complex alluvial fan stretches out to the northeastern foot of the Yabakei lava plateau. Many ruins, including remains of dwellings from the Jomon to Yayoi periods, can be found along the Yamakuni River and Tomoeda River. The Seto Inland Sea climate means little rain and frequent droughts, so there are many reservoirs, including Yakataike Pond. Agriculture is thriving, with rice, wheat, and vegetables being grown, with most of the produce shipped to Kitakyushu City. With the establishment of automobile-related factories in Kanda Town, the number of people working in industry now exceeds the number of people working in agriculture.
