...Roller skating became popular along with bicycles and jogging in the 1970s in the United States amid the ecology movement and growing interest in health, and roller discos were born. Roller derby, a show sport in which professional skaters roller skate in the same direction and overtake each other, also became popular. It is said that roller skating was introduced to Japan around 1877, but it began to take off in earnest when a skating rink was opened in Kanda, Tokyo in 1895.
