Aqua Appia (English)

...In the Republican period that followed, public works made a great progress in tandem with the Roman state's expansion abroad. The discontinuous trenches surrounding the city of Rome were replaced by a wall over 4.5m wide and 8.5m high (the so-called Servian Walls, 378 BC) after the Gauls plundered them. In the second half of the 4th century BC, when the conquest of the Italian peninsula began following the conquest of Latium, the construction of a radial military road network (the Appian Way, dating from 312 BC, is the oldest) and a water supply system (the Aqua Appia, dating from 312 BC, is the oldest, but underground) also began.
