A strait that lies between the southern tip of the Bicol Peninsula in the southeast of Luzon and the northwestern tip of Samar Island in the Philippines. It is narrow, with an average depth of 90 to 180 meters and a width of about 18 km. The two islands of Kapul and Dalpiri lie at the southwest entrance of the strait, and at its narrowest point it is only a few kilometers wide. It is one of two straits that connect the Pacific Ocean to the Philippine Inland Sea, and, along with the Surigao Strait between the islands of Leyte and Mindanao, it is of great strategic importance.
