A bay in central California, USA. It is 80 km long, 5-20 km wide, and stretches roughly north to south. It borders the Pacific Ocean at the Golden Gate Strait, which was once deeply eroded by the Sacramento River. It has some of the best natural harbors in the United States, such as the Port of Oakland and the Port of San Francisco, and important waterways to the Central Valley via the neighboring San Pablo Bay and the Carquinez Strait to the north. The San Francisco Bay area is one of the most densely populated areas on the Pacific coast of the United States, and includes cities such as San Francisco, Oakland, Richmond, and Berkeley. Silicon Valley, where the electronics industry is concentrated, is adjacent to the southeastern part of the bay. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
