San Francisco Peace Treaty

San Francisco Peace Treaty
The official name is the Treaty of Peace with Japan. A peace treaty concluded between Japan and the 48 Allied Powers to end World War II. It was signed in San Francisco on September 8, 1951. It came into effect on April 28, 1952. The Japanese representative was Yoshida Shigeru. It consisted of 27 articles in addition to the preamble, and recognized Japan's sovereignty and equality, but permitted the continued presence of foreign troops in Japan. It also stipulated the independence of Korea, the renunciation of Taiwan, the Penghu Islands, the Kuril Islands, and South Sakhalin, but the ownership of the islands remained unclear, leaving seeds of conflict. Okinawa and Ogasawara were scheduled to come under the trusteeship of the United Nations with the United States as the sole administering authority, and until then they were to remain under the control of the United States. It was a one-sided peace treaty that was not concluded with China, India, Burma, Yugoslavia, the Soviet Union, Poland, or the Czech Republic, and, together with the Japan-US Security Treaty that was concluded, it placed Japan under subordination to the United States. The following year, in 1953, Japan signed the Japan-China Peace Treaty with the Republic of China (Nationalist Government), and by 1957, diplomatic relations were restored with six countries, including India.
