Aplysia kurodai (rain tiger) - Aplysia kurodai (English spelling)

Aplysia kurodai (rain tiger) - Aplysia kurodai (English spelling)
A black, slug-shaped snail of the Aplysia family with a severely degenerated shell that is commonly found among seaweed on rocky coasts in spring (illustration). It is found throughout Japan, the Korean peninsula, China, and Taiwan. Its body length is usually around 15cm, but some can reach 40cm. When stretched out, its body is elongated and oval, tapering toward the front, with a black body covered in small grayish white spots, but there is considerable individual variation. It has a pair of anterior and posterior antennae (olfactory horns) on its head. The former are large and shaped like rabbit ears, which is why Aplysia is called sea hare in English.
