… The fact that David, the leader of French neoclassicism, spent his time in Brussels from 1816 until his death in 1825 played a decisive role in establishing neoclassical academicism centered in Brussels, and David's most talented student, Francois-Joseph Navez (1787-1869), gained great fame for his portraits reminiscent of Ingres. On the other hand, somewhat later in Antwerp, romanticists such as Gustave Wappers (1803-74) and Henri Leys (1815-69) emerged, who, while rooted in the painting traditions of their own country and Germany, depicted historical events in their own country, modelled on the work of Delacroix of France. Among the romantics, Wiertz turned his imagination to fantastical and grotesque themes. …
