This is a process in which a glassy glaze is baked onto the surface of a metal, and is also called enamel. It combines the durability of metal with the corrosion resistance and beauty of glass. In addition to steel plate, cast iron, aluminum, and copper are also used as base metals. After the metal surface is cleaned, an underglaze is baked on, and then an overglaze is baked on several times. The underglaze is colored by adding oxides such as cobalt and nickel to help it adhere to the metal. White pigments such as titanium oxide and tin oxide are added to the overglaze to give it a white finish, and a colored glaze or painting is applied as necessary. It is widely used for chemical equipment, sanitary equipment, kitchen utensils, etc., and those made with a base of copper, gold, or silver are considered to be cloisonné, a type of craft.

金属の表面にガラス質の釉(うわぐすり)を焼き付けて処理したもので，エナメルともいう。金属の堅牢性とガラスの耐食性，美観を兼備する。素地金属としては鋼板のほか，鋳鉄，アルミニウム，銅なども用いられる。金属表面を清浄にしたのち下釉を焼き付け，さらに上釉を数回焼き付ける。下釉は金属との密着を目的としてコバルト，ニッケルなどの酸化物を加えるため着色している。上釉は白色に仕上げるために酸化チタン，酸化スズなどの白色顔料を加え，必要に応じて色釉を施したり絵付を行う。化学機器，衛生器具，台所用品などに広く使われ，銅，金，銀などを素地にしたものは工芸品の七宝(しっぽう)とされる。
