A mammal of the family Narwhalidae (illustration). A small toothed whale that lives in the Arctic, males have a tusk on their upper left jaw that can reach 2 meters in length. The name "narwhal" comes from this, and the tusk that was brought to Europe was thought to be the horn of a fictional animal called a unicorn. Narwhals live in the Arctic, but are more common from Canada to northern Europe. Body length excluding tusks is 3.8 meters (females) to 4.5 meters (males). They have no dorsal fin. Juveniles are all gray-black, while adults have a black-brown back and a mostly white underside, with the border between the two forming leopard-like markings.
