A 40-day penitential holiday held in churches before Easter. The first day is called "Ash Wednesday". Its significance is that believers remember the Passion and death of Christ before the Resurrection, repent of their sins and fast in preparation for the victory of faith. Originally, fasting was required according to Mark 2:20. Nowadays, it is interpreted as being largely spiritual, and even in the Catholic Church, fasting is only required on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The ceremonial color is generally purple, except for red on Palm Sunday and Good Friday, and white on Holy Thursday, Holy Saturday, and other holidays. During Holy Week, organs are also prohibited. The number 40 days refers to the number of days after Noah's flood, the number of years the people of Israel wandered in the wilderness, and the number of days Christ fasted in the wilderness. Since Easter is a movable holiday, the dates of Lent change every year. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
