Theodore Roethke

Theodore Roethke
1908‐63
American poet. Born in Michigan in the Midwest. The son of German immigrants, he spent his childhood at the flower orchard his father ran, which had a decisive influence on him. His first collection of poems, Open House (1941), already contained works about people who live among plants. In his second collection, Lost Son (1948), the protagonist, who has lost his sense of self and experienced a mental crisis, gradually regains his sense of self through memories of various experiences he had with his father in the greenhouse. Written in fresh, colloquial free verse, this collection breathed new life into the formulaic American poetry that had developed after World War II.
