Born: 1508. Amsterdam
Died June 3, 1575. Dutch history and genre painter. Registered with the Guild of St. Luke in Antwerp in 1535. He continued to paint there until returning to Amsterdam in 1555. In 1563 he regained Amsterdam citizenship. He broke new ground by incorporating genre scenes into religious paintings. He was also a pioneer of still life painting. He is considered a representative artist of Dutch Mannerism. His works include the Altarpiece of the Descent from the Cross by Jan van der Beest (1546), housed in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp, and Christ in the House of Mary and Martha (1553), housed in the Mauritshuis.

オランダの歴史画家，風俗画家。 1535年アントウェルペンの聖ルカ組合に登録。その後 55年アムステルダムに帰るまで同地で制作。 63年再びアムステルダムの市民権を取得。宗教画に風俗的情景を盛込んで新生面を開く。また静物画の開拓者でもあった。オランダ・マニエリスムの代表的な作家と考えられる。作品は，アントウェルペン王立美術館収蔵の『ヤン・ファン・デル・ビーストのキリスト降架の祭壇画』 (1546) ，マウリッツハイス美術館の『マリアとマルタの家のキリスト』 (53) 。
