After working in Behrens's office, he went independent and was recognized for his work on the Fagus Shoe Factory (1911), which he designed in collaboration with Adolf Meyer (1881-1929). With Meyer's help, he exhibited the Model Factory (1914) at the Deutsche Werkbund Exhibition, becoming a leading architect at a young age. He served in the military during World War I, but after the defeat he was one of the first to form the Council of Artists and Labor with B.
