During the Ming Dynasty in China, the nine towns of Liaodong (Liaoyang), Jizhou (Jizhou), Xuanfu, Datong, Biantou, Yulin, Ningxia, Gansu (Ganzhou), and Guyuan (Guyuan) were fortified cities and districts established along the Great Wall to protect against the invasion of the northern peoples of Mongolia and Manchuria (Jurchens). These were rebuilt after the Tumu Incident in the mid-15th century and formed the core of the Ming Dynasty's northern border defenses. Each town had thousands or tens of thousands of cavalry and infantry troops stationed under the command of a military commander in chief of the town.
