A village in Chikujo County, eastern Fukuoka Prefecture. Population 4,389 (1995). To the east, it borders Oita Prefecture across the Yamakuni River. The northern part is in the center of the Nakatsu Plain, and the central to southern part is dominated by mountainous areas such as Mt. Karimata and Mt. Ohira, which are in the northern part of the Yabakei lava plateau. The main industries are agriculture and forestry, and in addition to rice and wheat, the town produces timber, fruit, tea, tobacco, and more. In recent years, shiitake mushroom cultivation has also become popular. There are over 250 ancient tombs near Tobaru, including the Anagahayama Tomb (history), and the remains of the Tomoeda Tile Kiln (history) remain in Tosai in the north. 福岡県東部,築上郡の村。人口4389(1995)。東は山国川を境に大分県に接する。北部は中津平野中央にあたり,中部から南部にかけては雁股山,大平山など耶馬渓溶岩台地の北部にあたる山地が占める。主産業は農林業で,米,麦のほか木材,果樹,茶,タバコなどを産する。近年はシイタケ栽培も盛ん。唐原(とうばる)付近には穴ヶ葉山古墳(史)をはじめ250余の古墳群があり,北部の土佐井(つちさい)には友枝瓦窯跡(史)が残る。
