French critic. Born in Boulogne-sur-Mer. He started out as a critic defending the Romantic movement, but at the same time he aimed to express the inner world of the 18th century, suffering from excessive introspection and a sense of self-loss, and published a collection of poems, Life, Poems and Opinions of Joseph Delorme (1829) and a novel, Love (1834). However, his dream of becoming a poet and novelist gradually gave way to his awareness as a critic. From around 1830, in addition to his commentaries, he began to write biographical essays on writers (such as Literary Portraits and Portraits of Women). In his large-scale work, Port-Royal (1840-59), based on a public lecture he gave in Switzerland in 1837-38, he portrayed the entire Port-Royal monastery, focusing on the secret religious life of the hermits who gathered there in the 17th century, as if to portray the monastery as a whole.

フランスの批評家。ブーローニュ･シュル･メールの生れ。ロマン派擁護の時評家として出発したが，他方で過剰な内省癖や自己喪失感に苦しむ世紀病的内面の表現をめざし，詩集《ジョゼフ･ドロルムの生涯と詩と意見》(1829)や小説《愛欲》(1834)を発表。しかし詩人･小説家たらんとする夢は，しだいに批評家としての自覚に席を譲ってゆく。1830年ごろから時評のほかに，伝記的方法による作家論を書き始め(《文学的肖像》《女性の肖像》など)，37‐38年にスイスで行った公開講座にもとづく大著《ポール･ロアイヤルPort‐Royal》(1840‐59)では，17世紀にポール･ロアイヤル修道院に集まった隠士たちの内密な信仰生活を中心に，この修道院に関する全体をいわば1人の人物の肖像画のようにして描いた。
