Taima Mandala

Japanese: 当麻曼荼羅 - たいままんだら
Taima Mandala
One of the three Pure Land Mandalas that were popular in Japan. It is a form of the Kannon Sutra Henso based on the Kannon Sutra Commentary by Zendo of the Tang Dynasty. It is characterized by dividing the Amitabha Pure Land painting into three parts: the left and right edges and the bottom edge, depicting the preface of the Kannon Sutra on the left edge, the first thirteen of the sixteen views on the right edge, and the back three views on the bottom edge, each of which depicts a scene from the nine stages of rebirth (raigo) in the Pure Land. The original, which is said to have been woven by Princess Chujohime in 763 (763) with lotus thread, is a large piece of tapestry from the prosperous Tang Dynasty in China, and is currently in a state of severe damage. Since the Kamakura period, it has been especially valued as Pure Land faith has spread, and many large and small transcriptions have been made.
