Born January 6, 1878 in Galesburg, Illinois
[Died] July 22, 1967. Flat Rock, North Carolina. American poet. Born to Swedish immigrants, he worked in various jobs, served in the Spanish-American War, and then studied at Lombard College in his hometown. He moved to Chicago in 1913, and in 1914 published "Chicago," a free verse poem reminiscent of Whitman, mixing colloquial and slang. Two years later, he published Chicago Poems (1916), which included this poem and sang about the nature of the Midwest. He became known as a central poet of the Chicago group, which included S. Anderson and Dreiser. His subsequent works include Cornhuskers (18, Pulitzer Prize), Smoke and Steel (20), and Complete Poems (50, Pulitzer Prize). He is also well known as a Lincoln scholar, and has written Abraham Lincoln: The Prairie Years (2 vols., 26) and Abraham Lincoln: The War Years (4 vols., 39, Pulitzer Prize winner). He has also written The American Songbag (27), a collection of folk songs and legends from around the country, and his autobiography Always the Young Strangers (53).

アメリカの詩人。スウェーデン系移民の子として生れ,種々の職業につき,アメリカ=スペイン戦争に従軍,その後郷里のロンバード大学に学んだ。 1913年シカゴに出,14年には口語や俗語を交えホイットマンを思わせる自由詩形を用いた「シカゴ」を『ポエトリー』誌に発表,2年後にその詩をはじめ,中西部のさまざまな自然を歌った『シカゴ詩集』 Chicago Poems (1916) を出版,S.アンダーソン,ドライサーらシカゴ・グループの中心詩人と目されるにいたった。以後『玉蜀黍 (とうもろこし) の皮むき』 Cornhuskers (18,ピュリッツァー賞) ,『煙と鋼鉄』 Smoke and Steel (20) ,『全詩集』 Complete Poems (50,ピュリッツァー賞) などがある。また,リンカーン研究者としても著名で,『リンカーン-大草原時代』 Abraham Lincoln: The Prairie Years (2巻,26) ,『リンカーン-南北戦争時代』 Abraham Lincoln: The War Years (4巻,39,ピュリッツァー賞) がある。ほかに各地の民謡や伝説を集めた『アメリカ民謡集』 The American Songbag (27) ,自伝『常に若いよそ者たち』 Always the Young Strangers (53) など,著書多数。
