The true meaning of the national polity

Japanese: 国体の本義 - こくたいのほんぎ

Published in May 1937 by the Ministry of Education. It clarifies the significance of the "clarification of the national polity" and "educational reform" that had been gaining momentum since around 1935, and aims to thoroughly imbue the people with this spirit. Based on myths and classics, it sees the various stages of national history as "manifestations of the spirit of the founding of the nation," while fiercely rejecting Western modern thought. In 1945, it was banned by the occupying forces along with "The Way of the Subject," but in 1949, an English translation by J. Gauntlett was published in the United States, and it remains a source of research to this day.
