A political monk during the Oda government at the end of the Warring States period. It is a popular belief that he was Asayama Nijo. During the Koji era (1555-58), he worked hard to restore the Imperial family and was granted the title of shonin by Emperor Gonara. He was later highly valued by Oda Nobunaga and Ashikaga Yoshiaki, and played a major role in repairing the Imperial Palace, dealing with temples and shrines, and mediating between Yoshiaki and Nobunaga. He also had deep ties with the Mori clan, and in 1563 (Eiroku 6) he served as an envoy for Ashikaga Yoshiteru to negotiate peace between Toyotomi (Otomo and Mori), and in 1573 (Tensho 1) he was involved in negotiations between the Oda and Mori after Yoshiaki left Kyoto. 戦国末織田政権期の政僧。朝山日乗とするのは俗説。弘治年間(1555‐58)朝家復興に尽力して後奈良天皇より上人号を授かった。のち織田信長，足利義昭に重用され，禁中修理奉行，寺社対策，義昭と信長の間の調停などに大きな役割をはたした。毛利氏との関係も深く，1563年(永禄6)足利義輝の使として豊芸(大友･毛利)間の和平にあたり，73年(天正1)義昭退京後の織田･毛利間の折衝にも関与した。【高木傭太郎】
