...As the war expanded into the Sino-Japanese Incident (Second Sino-Japanese War) and then the "Greater East Asia War," Pan-Asianism spread throughout the country, and ideas such as the "New Order in East Asia," the "East Asian Community," and the "Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere" were promoted from that standpoint. However, these were merely attempts to either cover up the fact of Japan's invasion of Asia or to some extent rationalize Japan's current methods of domination of Asia.

Pan-Asianism should be contrasted with cooperation with the Western powers. Both emerged under the condition that modern Japan, while sharply opposed to the great powers, could not avoid being subordinate to them due to the enormous disparity in power.
