A branch of medicine that deals with various analytical techniques and instrumental measurements to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Its subjects are primarily the human body in general, as well as bodily fluids such as blood and cerebrospinal fluid, various secretions such as gastric juice and bile, feces and urine, tissues, and organ sections (histopathology, cytology, etc.). Methods include clinical chemistry (e.g., qualitative and quantitative determination of sugar and protein in urine and blood), physical methods (e.g., recordings of electrocardiograms, electroencephalograms, ultrasound examinations, etc.), morphological methods (e.g., detection of bacteria in sputum and cytology), immunological methods (e.g., syphilis tests, rheumatoid tests, quantification of AFP and CEA), and radioimmunoassays.
