Evil woman story

...A general term for works that feature a "poison woman" as the protagonist, who, despite being a woman, is a tomboyish blackmailer and murderer. In Kabuki, the role of a poisonous woman is called an "evil woman," so it is also called an "evil woman story." The origin of the "poison woman" is said to be when Iwai Hanshiro IV played a prostitute named Mikazuki Osen in the play "Ofunamoriebi no kaomise" performed at the Edo Kawarazakiza Theater in November 1792 (Kansei 4), but it is suggestive that most of the "poison women" who live proactively as women come from bad places (such as brothels)....

…女だてらに男勝りの強請（ゆすり）や人殺しをする〈毒婦〉を主人公とした作品の総称。歌舞伎では毒婦の役柄を〈悪婆〉というので，悪婆物とも称する。1792年(寛政4)11月江戸河原崎座上演の《大船盛鰕顔見世（おおふなもりえびのかおみせ）》で4世岩井半四郎が三日月おせんという私娼を演じたのが悪婆の始まりとされるが，女性として積極的な生き方をする悪婆のほとんどが悪所(岡場所など)の出身であることは暗示的である。…
