It is an attached sea of the Indian Ocean located southwest of the Asian continent. It is bordered by India to the east and the Arabian Peninsula to the west, and the distance between Cape Comorin at the southern tip of India and Cape Asir at the northeastern tip of Africa is about 3000 km. The Gulf of Oman, which forms a branch of the Persian Gulf, enters the northwest, and the Gulf of Aden, which is part of the Red Sea, enters the southwest. The average depth is 2734 m, and the maximum depth is 5875 m in the Arabian Basin. It is divided into two basins by the Carlsberg Ridge, which extends southeastward from Socotra Island, northeast of the eastern tip of Africa. A deep-sea submarine canyon has been discovered off the mouth of the Indus River. Clastic sediments are distributed on the continental shelf slope, Globigerina ooze is distributed at depths of 2500 m or more, and red clay is distributed at depths of 3600 m or more. The Laccadive Islands are located off the west coast of India in the east, and the Kuria Murian Islands are located on the eastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula in the west. Major port cities include Mumbai (Bombay) in India, Cochin on the southwest coast, and Karachi in Pakistan.
