Giovanni Battista Viotti

Italian violinist and composer. He showed remarkable musical talent from an early age, and toured Europe, first accompanied by his teacher Bugnani, and later on his own. In the 1780s and 1790s, he was considered the greatest violinist of his time. From the 1790s onwards, he served as musical director and conductor of theatres in London and Paris, and in his later years, he served briefly as director of the Paris Opera, before dying in London. His playing was in keeping with the Italian tradition of violin technique, and was particularly noted for its brilliance, precision, and refined tone. His works are best represented by 29 violin concertos, which, within the framework of classical form, combine Italian technique with an emotional expression that foreshadows the Romantic period.

イタリアのバイオリン奏者、作曲家。幼少時から際だった楽才を示し、初めは師のブニャーニに連れられ、のちには1人でヨーロッパ各地を演奏旅行、1780、90年代には当代最高のバイオリン奏者とみなされた。90年代からはロンドン、パリで劇場の音楽監督、指揮者を務め、晩年には短期間パリ・オペラ座の監督も務め、ロンドンに没した。彼の演奏はイタリアのバイオリン演奏技巧の伝統を引き継いだもので、輝かしさ、的確さ、洗練された音色にとくに優れていたとされる。彼の作品は29曲のバイオリン協奏曲によって代表され、古典的な形式の枠のなかで、イタリアの演奏技巧とロマン派を予感させる感情表現とが融合されている。
