A city in central Hokkaido. Established as a city in 1922. Location of the Kamikawa General Subprefectural Bureau. Occupying the Kamikawa Basin and surrounding mountain areas in the upper reaches of the Ishikari River, it is an inland basin, so temperatures can exceed 30°C in summer and drop below -20°C in winter. It is served by three main lines, Hakodate, Soya, and Sekihoku, the Furano Line, and the Do-o Expressway. Tondenhei villages were established in Nagayama in 1891 and Higashiasahikawa the following year, and the basin was developed thereafter. The city developed as the center of development and as the location of the 7th Division. After World War II, as the economy of the inland region improved, it became the second most populous city in Hokkaido after Sapporo. Light industries such as plywood, building materials, furniture, pulp, shochu, sake, miso, and soy sauce are thriving. The city area is neatly divided. The area around the city is a rice paddy area known as the Kamikawa million koku, which has the most stable yield in Hokkaido. It is a garrison of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force. Kamuikotan is located on the western edge, and Asahiyama Zoo is located on the eastern edge. Asahikawa Airport is located in Higashikagura Town, southeast of the city. Area: 747.66 ^km2 . 北海道中央部の市。1922年市制。上川総合振興局所在地。石狩川上流部の上川盆地と周辺山地を占め，内陸盆地のため夏は30℃以上，冬は−20℃以下となることもある。函館，宗谷，石北の３本線と富良野(ふらの)線，道央自動車道が通じる。1891年永山，翌年東旭川に屯田兵村ができ，以後盆地の開拓が進み，市はその中心地，また第７師団の所在地として発展。第２次大戦後は内陸部の経済充実に伴い，その中心として札幌に次ぐ北海道第２の人口の都市となる。合板，建築材料，家具，パルプ，焼酎(しょうちゅう)，清酒，みそ，醤油など軽工業が盛ん。市街地は整然と区画されている。市街周辺は上川百万石といわれる水田地帯で，北海道では最も収量が安定している。陸上自衛隊駐屯地。西端に神居古潭(かむいこたん)，東部には旭山動物園がある。旭川空港は市の南東隣の東神楽(ひがしかぐら)町にある。747.66km²。34万7095人（2010）。
