A closely related species, the red-capped green pigeon, S. formosae , lives in the forests of the Nansei Islands south of Yakushima and Tanegashima, and there are many of them. This bird is also known as the shakuhachi pigeon because it makes a sound that sounds very similar to the shakuhachi flute: pō, pō, pō.
