Sumo ring - Dohyo

Japanese:
Sumo ring - Dohyo
A place where sumo matches are held. The dohyo appeared at the end of the 17th century. Before that, sumo did not have a dohyo. The first dohyo consisted of five bales of soil arranged in a square, which served as the boundary line, and the match was decided within this area. During the Genroku period (1688-1704), the dohyo were standardized to be circular, and the prototype of today's dohyo, which is set on top of a pile of earth, was created. After that, deciding techniques such as pushing the wrestler out of the ring or yorikiri were developed, and the sport became more interesting. The format has changed over the years, but currently, a square with sides of 545 cm (18 shaku) is piled with soil, and a dohyo (rice bale cut into thirds and filled with soil) is buried in the circle so that the inside diameter is 455 cm (15 shaku). In the past, four pillars (shihonbashira) were set up at the four corners of the ring, but since the autumn tournament in 1952, these have been replaced by tassels (fusa). →Ring-entering→Related topics Okinawa sumo|Tekazu-iri
