He joined the choir of King's College, Cambridge in 1596, and became organist at the Royal Chapel in 1605 and at Westminster Abbey in 1623. He was an accomplished keyboard player and also produced many works of church music, chamber music, keyboard music, and madrigals, making him one of the most important composers of 17th-century England.
