Gibbons, Orlando
Born: 25 December 1583, Oxford
[Died] June 5, 1625. Canterbury. English composer and organist. He joined the choir of King's College, Cambridge in 1596, and became organist at the Royal Chapel in 1605 and at Westminster Abbey in 1623. He was an accomplished keyboard player and also produced many works of church music, chamber music, keyboard music, and madrigals, making him one of the most important composers of 17th-century England. His works include "Fantaisie for Three Parts for Viol" (c. 1610) and "Madrigals and Motets in Five Parts" (12).

He was Archbishop of Baltimore (1877) and then Cardinal (86), and was instrumental in the founding of the Catholic University of America, becoming its first president. He was sympathetic to the working people and defended their cause. He also wrote books to enlighten America's anti-Catholic public opinion. His main work was "The Faith of Our Fathers" (76).

[Died] August 3, 1721. London. British sculptor. Although he also produced bronze statues such as the "Portrait of James II," he is primarily known for his woodcarvings and architectural decorations. He is famous for the decorations of Hampton Palace and the interior of St. Paul's Cathedral. He carved flowers, birds, leaves, and other subjects in a highly realistic style. He was appointed Royal Sculptor by William III in 1693.

イギリスの彫刻家。『ジェームズ2世像』などの銅像もあるが,おもに木彫建築装飾によって知られる。ハンプトン宮殿の装飾,セント・ポール大聖堂の内部装飾で有名。花鳥,木の葉などをきわめて写実的に彫刻。 1693年ウィリアム3世によって王室彫刻家に指名された。
