It can refer to both sacred fire, such as that used to cook offerings to the gods or the Olympic torch, and impure fire, such as that used by women in the funeral home or to cook food during menstrual periods. The former is a fire that is ignited by sunlight or flint and is separate from everyday life, while the latter is a fire that is considered impure and isolated depending on the living conditions of the person using it. Customs of keeping separate fires, such as not using a brazier in a mourning home, not eating in a bereaved home, or not smoking tobacco, all come from the taboo against fire. These generally arose from the belief that sharing a fire indicates that people will eat food cooked over that fire, and thus strengthen relationships between people.
