Born on March 22, 1897. Joined Shochiku Kamata Studio in 1920. His first directorial work was "Yamagure Ruru" the following year. In 1940 he went to the US and worked as Charlie Chaplin's production assistant. After the war he became a professor at Nihon University and president of Nikkatsu Art Academy. He passed away on May 20, 1985, at the age of 88. Born in Kumamoto Prefecture. Graduated from Tokyo Imperial University. His real name was Kiyohiko.
