Altair - Altair (English spelling)

A proper name for the alpha star of Aquila. In Arabia, it was called "Al Nasr al Tair (Flying Eagle)" together with the beta and gamma stars of Aquila, but the current proper name comes from the latter part of that name. In the summer night sky, it forms the "Great Summer Triangle" when connected with Vega, the alpha star of Lyra, and Deneb, the alpha star of Cygnus. Its Chinese name is Kengyusei and its Japanese name is Hikoboshi. It faces Vega across the Milky Way, and has been familiar to Japanese people since ancient times as the star of Tanabata. In China, it is called "Kako Sansei" along with the beta and gamma stars, and Altair is also called the Great General, the beta star the Left General, and the gamma star the Right General. Its apparent magnitude is 0.77. Its position on the celestial sphere is 19:51 right ascension and +8°52' declination at the 2000th equinox. It is 17 light years from the Sun. It is a main sequence star of spectral type A7. Its surface temperature is 7500K. Its mass is 1.7 times that of the Sun, and its equatorial radius is estimated to be 1.8 times that of the Sun. Altair rotates at high speed, with the rotation speed at the equatorial surface reaching at least 240 kilometers per second. Its equatorial radius is about 14% larger than its polar radius due to centrifugal force. In astrology, it is considered a star that brings misfortune.

わし座のα(アルファ)星の固有名。アラビアで、わし座のβ(ベータ)星、γ(ガンマ)星とあわせて「飛ぶ鷲(わし)Al Nasr al Tair」とよんでいたが、現在の固有名はその後半部に由来する。夏の夜空で、こと座α星のベガ、はくちょう座α星のデネブと結んで「夏の大三角」をつくる。漢名は牽牛星(けんぎゅうせい)、和名は彦星(ひこぼし)といい、天の川を挟んで織女星（ベガ）と相対し、古来から、七夕(たなばた)の星として日本人には親しみ深い。中国では、β星、γ星とともに「河鼓三星(かこさんせい)」と名づけ、アルタイルを大将軍、β星を左将軍、γ星を右将軍ともいう。実視等級は0.77等。天球上の位置は、2000年分点で赤経19時51分、赤緯プラス8度52分。太陽からの距離は17光年。スペクトル型A7の主系列星。表面温度は7500K。質量は太陽の1.7倍で、赤道半径は1.8倍と推定される。アルタイルは高速自転をしており、赤道表面の自転速度は少なくとも秒速240キロメートルに達する。赤道半径は遠心力のために極半径よりも14％ほど膨らんでいる。占星術では災いをおこす星とされている。
