An ethnic group formed after the October Revolution by the unification of Turkic tribes of the Altai region in southern Western Siberia, Russia. Population: 69,400 (1989). The group consists of the northern group, such as the Tubarals, Cherkans, and Kumanzins, who make their living by reindeer breeding and hunting and gathering, and the southern group, such as the Altai-Kizhi and Telengits, who breed horses, cattle, and sheep and engage in farming. Since the 17th century, there has been increased contact with Russians, and as a result of their intense missionary work, they have become Russian Orthodox Christians, but the influence of traditional shamanism remains strong.
