Artaxerxes I

Japanese: アルタクセルクセス[1世]（英語表記）Artaxerxēs I

King of the Achaemenid Empire. Reigned 465-424 BC. Known as Macrocheir (Long Hand). Succeeded his father, Xerxes I, who was assassinated, and defeated the intrigues within the palace. An Egyptian revolt broke out early in his reign, but it was prolonged because Athens supported Egypt. However, Sparta provided funds to keep Athens in check, and put down the revolt in 454 BC. He adjusted relations with Athens with the Treaty of Callias in 449 BC. He is known for treating the exiled Themistocles well as a friend of the king.

アケメネス朝ペルシア帝国の王。在位，前465‐前424年。〈マクロケイル(長い手)〉の名で知られる。暗殺された父クセルクセス1世のあとをついで即位し，宮廷内の陰謀を打倒した。治世初期におこったエジプトの反乱は，アテナイがエジプトを支援したために長期化したが，スパルタに資金を提供してアテナイを牽制し，前454年に鎮圧。前449年のカリアスの和約により，アテナイとの関係を調整した。亡命してきたテミストクレスを王の友人として厚遇したことは有名。
