Rogier, Charles Latour
Born: August 17, 1800, Saint-Quentin
[Died] May 27, 1885. Brussels. Belgian politician. One of the founders of Belgium. Born in northern France, he moved to Liège and became a lawyer. After 1824, he published a magazine that criticized Belgian rule by the Netherlands. When the Brussels independence movement broke out in August 1830, he played an active role in leading it, preaching the achievement of independence and the adoption of a hereditary monarchy, and supporting Leopold I, Duke of Saxe-Coburg, as king. In 1831, he was governor of Antwerp (Antwerp), and from 1832 to 1834, he was Minister of Public Works, Education, and Culture in 1840, and Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior in the Liberal Party cabinet from 1847 to 1852. He was Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior again in 1857, and Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1861. In 1863, he resolved the issue of the Netherlands' customs rights over the port of Antwerp. In 1867, he retired from politics.
