A nurse who is part of the military's chain of command and who cares for wounded soldiers on the battlefield. In Japan, the Hakuaisha, the predecessor of the Japanese Red Cross, had already sent male nurses to Kumamoto and Nagasaki during the Seinan War. When the Sino-Japanese War broke out, the Japanese Red Cross dispatched nurses it had trained to the battlefields of Ujina and Hiroshima. The fact that women would take part in the war attracted public attention, and the Women's Military Song (1894, "The sound of the firearms recedes into the distance..."), which was composed at that time, was sung for many years to come. During the Russo-Japanese War, their activities expanded to Korea and Manchuria, and some nurses were killed. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
