A mountain range that spans Russia, Mongolia, and China. In Chinese characters, it is called Mount Artaisan. It stretches for about 2,000 km from the Gobi Desert in the southeast to the West Siberian lowlands in the northwest, and is divided into three parts: Mongolian Altai, Gobi Altai, and the original Altai. The highest peak on the ridgeline between China and Mongolia is Youyifeng (Mongolian name: Khitin, 4,374m). Altai means "golden mountain" in Mongolian. It is rich in mineral resources such as gold, iron, and mercury. The mountain ranges of the Altai region of Russia are rich in biodiversity, and were registered as a World Heritage Site in 1998.
