Liberec - Liberec (English spelling)

The central city in northern Bohemia, Czech Republic. German name: Reichenberg. Population: 99,832 (2001). Located upstream of the Ruzicka Nysa (German name: Neisse) River, a tributary of the Odra (German name: Oder) River. Originating from German colonization of the east in the late 13th century, the city has been known for its textiles since the settlement of weavers at the end of the 16th century. In the 18th century, it developed with woolen textile production, and since the 19th century, textile, machinery, glass, and food industries have flourished. It was a German town, but German residents were forcibly relocated after World War II, and today the residents are Czech. Remaining buildings include a 16th century Renaissance palace, an 18th century Baroque Holy Cross Church, and a neo-Renaissance town hall from the end of the 19th century.
