Died June 20, 1958. Cologne. German organic chemist. Studied chemistry at the Universities of Berlin and Kiel, receiving his doctorate from the latter in 1926. Professor at Kiel University (1934-36). Head of research at E.G. Farben Industries (36-40). Professor of chemistry and head of the chemical research laboratory at the University of Cologne (40). In 1928, together with his mentor O. Diels, he discovered the reaction between dienes and quinones. He also discovered that dienes react easily with various compounds containing activated double or triple bonds (diene synthesis), which is now known as the Diels-Alder reaction. He was the first to experimentally elucidate the nature of this reaction, and demonstrated that it could be applied to the synthesis of many cyclic compounds. He also used this reaction to develop synthetic resins. For these achievements, he and Diels were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1950.
