A coal whose coalification rank is between subbituminous and anthracite. It is black in appearance and is a typical type of coal. It is called bituminous coal because it produces bitumen (asphalt and pitch-like substances) during pyrolysis. The carbon content determined by elemental analysis is less than that of anthracite, but is roughly in the range of 80-90% by mass (daf). It has the highest caking property among coals, so it is used as a raw material for coke production, and strongly caking bituminous coal is particularly important. According to the JIS standard, it is broadly divided into two types, with calorific values on an anthracite and dry basis (daf) of 34-35 MJ kg -1 and 35 MJ kg -1 or more, the latter being called strongly caking coal. The former, which has low caking property and a high volatile content, is used as fuel for power generation. The total production of hard coal (2001) was approximately 3.8 billion t, and bituminous coal accounts for the majority of this.
