An annual plant of the Lamiaceae family. It grows in the fields and mountains of Hokkaido to Kyushu and Korea. The stems are about 30 cm tall, and the leaves are opposite, long ovate, and have short stalks. From summer to autumn, flower spikes appear at the ends of the branches, and small, pale pink, lip-shaped flowers bloom next to the oval bracts. The calyx has five lobes and the lobes are the same shape. The closely related Himejiso resembles Yamajiso, but has hairs at the nodes of the stem, lanceolate bracts, and lip-shaped calyx. Inukoju resembles Himejiso, but the stems and leaves are often tinged purple, have fine hairs, and have no hairs at the nodes. Both are distributed throughout Japan.
