A pattern of wavy lines facing each other vertically, with the spaces between them varying in width and width. It is also called "tachiwaku" or "tachiwaki." It has been around since ancient times in both the East and the West, but in Japan there are variations called Kumo Tatewaku, Ume Tatewaku, Hamitatewaku, and Karakusa Tatewaku, depending on the pattern placed in the spaces. The Shosoin Treasures include "Tatewakukamon Ungenfutsu" (Nara period). In the Kamakura period, Kumo Tatewaku was used as a yusoku pattern for princes and regents, with the Konoe family using a pattern of four clusters of clouds arranged in a vertical diamond shape, and the Ichijo family using a single cloud placed within a vertical waku with the lines of the vertical waku woven into the ground. Various variations were created and used. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
