[Born] Tenen 4 (976).1.3. Kyoto [Died] May 9, 1017, Kyoto The 67th Emperor (reigned 1011-16). His name was Okisada. He was the second son of Emperor Reizei, and his mother was the daughter of Grand Minister of State Kaneie, posthumously named Empress Dowager Fujiwara no Choshi. He ascended to the throne in the 8th year of Kanko (11th year of the Kanko era). This was the heyday of the Fujiwara clan, and Michinaga wielded great power as Minister of the Left. When he was the Crown Prince, he had two wives, Dainagon Fujiwara no Saitoki's daughter Shoshi and Michinaga's daughter Kenshi. After he ascended to the throne, despite Shoshi's wish to become empress, he shied away from Michinaga and made Kenshi empress and Shoshi empress as consort. Michinaga proposed that Shoshi be posthumously awarded the title of Grand Minister of State and made Shoshi empress, but when the issue of succession arose, she strongly advocated for the support of her grandson, Emperor Ichijo's second son, Prince Atsunari (later Emperor Go-Ichijo). The Emperor accepted the proposal on the condition that Shoshi's first son, Prince Atsunari, be made crown prince, and abdicated in January 1016 after four and a half years on the throne. His mausoleum is located at Kitayama Ryo in Kinugasa Nishison Join-cho, Kita-ku, Kyoto City.
