…It is surrounded by lakes and rivers, and the center of the state of Wan (the province's other name Wan comes from this) during the Spring and Autumn period was near Qianshan County, near the foot of the mountain. As the marshes were developed and water transportation improved, cities along the river developed, and during the Song dynasty, Huaining County and Anqing Prefecture were relocated here. During the Qing dynasty, the provincial government was established here, and in 1902 (the 28th year of the Guangxu era), the port was opened to the public under the New Treaty of Trade between the Ying and Qing. …
