Among the Northern House of the Fujiwara clan, this is a branch of the Ogimachi Sanjo family, a branch of the Sanjo family. It began with Kintoki, the son of Sanjo Sanetsugu, Minister of the Interior in the early Muromachi period. The family name was derived from the place where their residence was located, Nishisuzaku, north of Sanjo. The family's rank was that of a minister. Kintoki and his successors were Dainagon (chief ministers), with Kinyasu, Sanetaka, and Sanetaka's son, Kinjo, serving as Minister of the Interior. Sanetaka, Kinjo, and Sanetaka from the Muromachi to Azuchi-Momoyama periods were renowned as classical scholars and poets, and inherited the Kokin Denju. Sanetaka is a representative figure of medieval culture and literature, and his diary, Sanetaka Koki, is well-known as a first-class historical source. In the Edo period, Kintomi, Saneyoshi, and Kichi were also active as poets. Kichi was also one of the Seven Nobles of the anti-foreign faction at the end of the Edo period. He became a count in the Meiji period. In addition to waka poetry, his family business included the art of incense. The Mushanokoji and Oshiokoji families, which branched off from the family in the early Edo period, also produced many excellent poets.
