Wife of Chinese literary figure Lu Xun. Women's activist. Pen name Jing Song, etc. Born in Panyu County, Guangdong Province. Entered Beijing Women's Normal University in 1923, where she served as student council president. After the March 18 incident, in which Duan Qirui suppressed student activism, she escaped Beijing with Lu Xun, who was also a professor, and both became teachers at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou. In October 1927, to escape Chiang Kai-shek's oppression, she escaped Guangzhou again and went to Shanghai, where she began living with Lu Xun the following year in 1928. After Lu Xun's death in 1936, he worked to organize his writings and published the Complete Works of Lu Xun, but in 1941 he was arrested by the Japanese military's military police when they occupied the Shanghai Concession and injured his leg during torture. After the founding of the People's Republic, she held important positions such as member of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and vice-chairman of the National Women's Federation, and visited Japan in 1951 and 1961. She died on March 4, 1968 at the age of 70. Her collection of letters with Lu Xun, Liang Di Shu (1933), is a record of their affection and is also of great literary value. Before and After the Disaster (1947; translated into Japanese as Records of a Dark Night), is a valuable record of her arrest by the Japanese Military Police. She also wrote many other works that chronicle her memories of Lu Xun, such as Lu Xun's Memories (1961).
