...there were three patterns: (1) a coalition pattern in which the CDU/CSU (hereafter abbreviated as CDU) was the main force with the FDP and others joining, (2) a grand conservative-progressive coalition pattern between the CDU/CSU and SPD from 1966 to 1969, and (3) a reformist-center coalition pattern between the SPD and FDP from 1969 to 1982. From the autumn of 1982, the government moved back to the first pattern, with the CDU/CSU and FDP forming a coalition. Federal chancellors were Adenauer from 1949-63, Ludwig Erhard (1897-1977) from 1963-66, Kurt Georg Kiesinger (1904-88, all CDU) from 1966-69, Brandt from 1969-74, and Helmut Schmidt (1918- ) from 1974-82....
