3rd power - Sanjo

Japanese:
3rd power - Sanjo

A Buddhist doctrinal term. In Sanskrit, it is called Trini Yānāni or Yāna-traya, both of which mean "three vehicles." The "vehicles" (vehicles) are metaphors for the teachings that carry people to enlightenment in Buddhism, and in Mahayana Buddhism there are three: the Shravaka-yana (vehicle for Buddhist disciples), the Pratyekabuddha-yana (vehicle for those who have attained enlightenment on their own), and the Bodhisattva-yana (vehicle for those seeking the path of the Mahayana). However, in Hinayana Buddhism (also known as Hinayana Buddhism), the Bodhisattva-yana is not taught, but instead the Buddha-yana (vehicle for the Buddha). In the Lotus Sutra, an early Mahayana sutra, it is said that the three vehicles are expedient means to lead to the One Vehicle (also called the Buddha Vehicle or One Buddha Vehicle), and that all can equally become Buddhas through the true One Vehicle.
